When a storm hits in Ireland, it’s usually wind + rain + flying debris rather than snow drama (well apart from the Beast from the East when all that really happend for 2 days was we ate bread… and lots of it!)
A bit of prep goes a long way. Here are the top practical tips to secure your home before and during a storm 🌧️🍃
🏠 Outside the house (most important)
1. Tie down or bring in loose items
Garden furniture, bins, plant pots, trampolines, BBQs – if it can move, it will. Bring them inside or secure them firmly.
2. Check roof tiles & slates
Loose tiles are one of the biggest causes of storm claims in Ireland. A quick visual check (or a roofer if you’re unsure) can save serious damage.
3. Clear gutters and drains
Blocked gutters = water backing up into roofs and walls. Clear leaves and debris before the storm hits.
4. Secure sheds & garages
Make sure doors are closed and locked. Lightweight sheds should be anchored if possible.
5. Trim overhanging trees or branches
Especially anything close to the house, cars, or power lines. If in doubt, get a professional.
🪟 Inside the house
6. Close and lock windows & doors
This helps prevent wind pressure forcing them open and reduces water ingress.
7. Move valuables away from windows
If glass breaks, you don’t want electronics or furniture taking the hit.
8. Know where your stopcock is
If a pipe bursts or flooding starts, shutting off the water quickly can limit damage.
⚡ Power & safety
9. Prepare for power cuts
Have torches, batteries, phone power banks and candles (used safely) ready.
10. Unplug sensitive electronics
Power surges during storms can damage TVs, routers and computers.
🚗 Cars & personal safety
11. Park away from trees and walls
If possible, use a garage or park in an open area.
12. Stay indoors during red or orange warnings
Flying debris is a serious risk – don’t chance it.
📸 Insurance tip (a big one)
13. Take photos before & after the storm
If damage happens, photos make claims much easier and faster.
